Stranger in a Strange Land
It had been over 10 years since I’ve come back to Dixie. Things are much different than where I live now.
I went to a wedding of a good, old friend. Though now, since it had been so long, I didn’t know anyone. It was a really bizarre experience. The only person who really wanted me there was my good friend. I saw him get married. I saw him cut the cake and dance with his new wife. It was great to share that with him. He’s a good guy. But, I couldn’t help but feel out of place. A stranger. I could hear people’s thoughts. “Who is that guy?” “Have you seen him before?” “Just ignore him”
It was kind of like the Lost episode where Jack’s tattoo said, “He is among us, but he is not one of us” I’m just glad I wasn’t ganged up on by a group of guys intent on beating me to a bloody pulp.
It was to be expected. I didn’t have delusions that I would see anyone that I knew because those times had come and gone. It was a whole new world now. Both he and I had new friends, a different life. But, with all of that, it’s still great that we are able to keep in touch.
